The Eleanor Spragg Scholarships have been set up by Christopher and Terry Spragg to honour the contribution made to music education by Mrs Eleanor Spragg (Christopher Spragg’s mother). Eleanor Spragg played both the piano and cello and taught at Avondale College, Papatoetoe High School and Penrose High School. She took great interest in encouraging students to participate in orchestral playing and chamber music. Eleanor played in a number of community orchestras from New Plymouth to Auckland – at one time driving regularly from New Plymouth to Hamilton to perform there. She played in both the Howick Orchestra and the Manukau Symphony Orchestra in their earliest years.

The Eleanor Spragg scholarships provide a link between the Manukau Symphony and the Howick School of Music (HSM) as it is presented annually to students of the HSM who wish to perform with the Manukau Symphony Orchestra.
